Let’s Start From The Beginning, How Did You Gain Interest To Pursue Chemistry?
My interest in chemistry started in high school. On the first day of class high school chemistry teacher gave us a test to see what we knew about chemistry and I scored a perfect score. My teacher pulled me aside and told me that he wanted to put me in AP chemistry and he encouraged me to pursue a career in science. I naturally excelled in math and science so I knew a STEM base career would be perfect for me. College helped me to see the need for Black people in STEM. I not only got to see the disparities in STEM but I experienced them.

Any Struggles Along The Way?
At the school that I attended there were only three Black female students (including myself) majoring in chemistry. The three of us had to band together to make it through our coursework. We were often overlooked for research opportunities and had difficulties getting help from TA's and professors. My struggle continued once I entered the workforce. I would often be the only Black person in the room and I struggled to try to find my footing. I learned very early in my career that there was little to no space for Black STEM professionals. If I was going to make it in this field, I was going to have to create my own space. In my junior year of college, I started to notice the disparities and lack of care in skin and hair care products for Black women. I knew I wanted to add my voice to this conversation and that's how my company Relevant Cosmetics came to life. I set out to develop products that were safe and of good quality for Black women to use. I thought I would only develop products for my cosmetic line, but I started getting inquires from people asking for help with the development of their product line. I realized that I could make a greater impact by helping others develop their dreams and that's how Relevant Laboratories was created. I set out with a mission to formulate products of every kind for those interested in releasing a product.
How Has Your Career Impacted Others?
I worked in multiple industries throughout my career as a chemist and each opportunity gave me chance to make a meaningful impact in not only our company but to everyone our work touches. For example, when I worked in the food industry I was able to develop formulas and systems that ensured safe and quality food. The company that I worked for made products just about every food company you could think of, so to play a huge role in their research and development process meant that my discoveries touched millions. I also worked in the environmental industry. During my time I worked to develop methods and techniques that help to protect our environment. Now as a chemist formulation chemist I work to develop formulas for my clients that will help enhance their brand and make their dreams come true. One of the things I enjoy the most about my career is being able to create products for emerging Black business owners. I get the opportunity to develop safe and innovative products for Black people with the intent of leveling the playing field and creating space for Black companies.

What is Next For Your Brand?
My company is multi-layered. I have a cosmetic line, I formulate products for other companies and I will soon be releasing a skincare line. However, I believe my greatest work will be helping to develop and impart to the next generation of STEM professionals. I am currently working on developing a mentoring program that starts on the collegiate level for Black students. I hope is to be able to offer a space for research opportunities, free tutoring services, job opportunities, and mentoring as they learn to navigate through their career as a STEM professional.
