Being in STEM can sometimes be very stressful, with the demands of many different things. Yoga helps me to center myself and always remain calm. It also helps me to relieve stress. Here are four yoga poses I enjoy doing when I am overwhelmed. These are beneficial to women in STEM fields and anyone else willing to give them a try!
I tend to have a lot of tension in my neck, shoulder, and back areas due to the heavy load in my backpack. So, a lot of the poses I do are focuses on relieving stress in the back and neck.
1. Child’s Pose or Balasana
Benefits:
● It helps to stretch your thighs, hips and ankles
● It calms the brain and helps relieve stress and fatigue
● Relieves back and neck pain
2. Plow Pose or Halasana
Benefits:
● Calms the brain while reducing stress and fatigue
● Stimulates abdominal organs and thyroid gland
● Stretches shoulder and spine
● Healing for backache, headache, insomnia, sinusitis
3. Standing Forward Bend or Uttanasana
Benefits:
● Calms brain and relieves mild depression
● Reduces fatigue and anxiety
● Improves digestion
● Relieves headache and insomnia
● Healing for asthma, high blood pressure
4. Supported Shoulder Stand or Salamba Sarvangasana
Benefits:
● Calms brain and relieves mild depression
● Stretches shoulders and neck
● Tones legs and buttocks
● Alleviates fatigue and insomnia
